What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?
Not every drip needs a midnight call — but some plumbing problems get dramatically worse within hours. Call us immediately if you’re dealing with any of the following:
- Burst or frozen pipes — Water volume from a single burst line can damage floors, ceilings, and walls within minutes. Shut off your main water valve and call right away.
- Sewage backup — Raw sewage surfacing in a basement drain or toilet is a health hazard. Don’t attempt to clear it yourself; it requires professional equipment and disposal.
- Overflowing toilet that won’t stop — Turn off the supply valve at the base and call before water reaches the subfloor.
- No hot water (water heater failure) — Especially urgent in a GTA winter when temperatures drop below -15°C.
- Flooding from a failed sump pump — A sump pump failure during a heavy rain event (common in Scarborough, Etobicoke, and North York’s older neighbourhoods) can mean thousands of dollars in basement damage within a single storm.
- Gas-line adjacent leaks — If you smell gas, leave the building immediately and call Enbridge Gas (1-877-362-7434) before calling any plumber. Once the gas utility has cleared the area, call us to assess related plumbing damage.
- Visible water damage spreading through ceilings or walls — Hidden pipe failure is often the source; a camera inspection can locate it without tearing open walls unnecessarily.
If you’re unsure whether your situation qualifies — call anyway. We’ll tell you honestly over the phone whether it needs same-day attention or can wait for a scheduled visit.
What Happens When You Call Our Emergency Line
Here’s exactly what to expect from the moment you reach us to the moment the problem is fixed:
1. Immediate phone triage (under 2 minutes) A real person answers — not a voicemail, not a call centre. We’ll ask you three questions: what’s happening, what’s your address, and have you shut off the water supply if there’s active flooding. We’ll give you a same-day arrival window on the spot.
2. Upfront estimate before any work begins Our technician arrives, diagnoses the problem, and gives you a flat-rate quote. You approve it before we touch anything. No surprise invoices. No “we’ll add it up after.”
3. Repair completed on the first visit Our trucks carry the parts needed for the most common Toronto-area emergency repairs — burst copper lines, sump pump replacements, main shutoff valve failures, and blocked main drains. Most jobs are done in one call.
4. Post-repair check and cleanup We test the repair under pressure, confirm no secondary issues, and leave the work area clean. We’ll also tell you if anything else needs attention — straight talk, no upsell pressure.
Burst & Frozen Pipe Repair
Toronto winters are hard on plumbing. Pipes in uninsulated exterior walls, unheated crawl spaces, and older pre-war homes (common in the Annex, East York, and Riverdale) are the most vulnerable. When a pipe freezes and then thaws, the expansion can split copper or galvanized steel lines.
We locate the break, isolate the section, and make a code-compliant repair. If the pipe location suggests it will freeze again, we’ll tell you honestly what you should do to prevent a repeat — rerouting, insulation, or heat tape — and quote it separately so you can decide without pressure.
Sewage Backup & Main Drain Blockages
A main drain blockage backs up every drain in the house simultaneously — tubs, basement floor drains, and toilets all show it at once. These are almost always in the main line running from your home to the city sewer, and they require professional rodding or hydro-jetting equipment to clear properly.
We carry both. For older clay-tile or cast-iron lines common in pre-1970 GTA homes, we’ll also recommend a camera inspection after clearing to check whether tree root intrusion or pipe collapse is the underlying cause — because a blockage that comes back in six weeks wasn’t fully resolved the first time.
Sump Pump Failure
The City of Toronto has logged significant basement flooding events in Scarborough, Etobicoke, and parts of North York during heavy rainfall. A failed sump pump during a storm event is not a morning problem — it is a right-now problem.
We carry replacement sump pumps on our emergency trucks. If yours has failed, we can have a new unit installed and operating within the same visit. We also carry backup battery units if you want to add redundancy the same night. Note: If you’re in the City of Toronto and replacing a sump pump as part of flood protection, you may be eligible for a rebate under the City of Toronto Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program — ask us about it when we’re on site.
Water Heater Failure
Waking up to cold water is miserable. A failed water heater at 11pm in January is also, technically, an emergency — especially in a household with young children or elderly residents.
We service and replace both tank-style and tankless (on-demand) water heaters. If your unit is under 10 years old, it may be repairable on the spot. If it’s beyond repair, we carry replacement tank units for same-night installation. Tankless replacements are typically scheduled for the next business morning given the installation complexity.
Leaking or Burst Supply Lines
Washing machine hoses, toilet supply lines, and under-sink braided connectors all have a service life — and they tend to let go when the house is quiet and no one’s watching. The damage they cause in a few hours can far exceed the cost of the repair.
We’ll locate the source, stop the leak, replace the failed component, and check surrounding connections for signs of wear.
Overflowing or Non-Functioning Toilets
Most toilet overflows are a blockage in the trap or the line immediately downstream. Some are a sign of a main drain backup (see above). We’ll diagnose which is which and fix the actual cause — not just the symptom.
Why GTA Homeowners Call Us for Emergencies
We give you a real price before we start. Competitors in the GTA are known for quoting low on the phone and adding labour and “diagnostic fees” after the fact. We don’t. You get a written flat-rate quote on arrival and you approve it before we touch anything. The price on that quote is the price on your invoice.
No overtime charges. Our emergency rate is our rate — we don’t add a premium because you called at 2am or on a Sunday. If we quote $X, that’s what you pay regardless of when the call is.
Licensed plumbers only. All work is performed by licensed, insured plumbers. [Insert licence/Skilled Trades Ontario registration # here.] We don’t sub out emergency calls to unlicensed labour.
We’ll tell you what we find — including things that can wait. If the camera inspection shows a secondary issue that isn’t urgent, we’ll tell you and explain why it can wait for a scheduled visit. We’re not going to manufacture urgency at midnight to upsell you.
What Makes GTA Plumbing Emergencies Different
If you live in the GTA, your home’s plumbing has characteristics that affect how emergencies develop and how they’re repaired:
- Pre-1960 homes (common in East York, the Annex, Parkdale, and Scarborough’s older areas) often have galvanized steel supply lines that corrode from the inside over time. A burst here isn’t just one pipe — it can be a sign that multiple sections are close to failure. We’ll tell you what we see.
- 1960s–80s construction frequently used ABS plastic drain lines, which can become brittle and crack without warning, especially in cold crawl spaces.
- Condos (especially downtown and Midtown) have individual unit shutoffs and shared stack risers. Emergency repairs in condo units sometimes require coordination with building management for water shutoffs — we’re familiar with the protocol.
- City of Toronto Basement Flooding subsidies cover backwater valve installation (up to $1,750) and sump pump installation with a severance of weeping tile (up to $1,750) through Toronto Water. Not all emergency sump pump replacements qualify — ask us during the visit and we’ll tell you honestly whether your situation is eligible.
Signs Your “Non-Emergency” Is Actually Urgent
Some plumbing problems seem minor until they aren’t. Contact us same-day (not necessarily midnight, but don’t wait a week) if you notice:
- A toilet that rocks slightly on its base — can indicate a failed wax seal and subfloor water damage beneath
- Soft spots in the floor near a bathroom or kitchen — active moisture damage underway
- Water stains on ceilings that are growing — the source is still active
- Sudden drop in water pressure across the whole house — main line issue
- Water meter spinning when all fixtures are off — hidden active leak somewhere in the system
Emergency Plumbing FAQ
Arrival time depends on your location within the GTA and active call volume, but our goal is to be on-site within 60–90 minutes for addresses within the City of Toronto. Outer GTA cities (Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, Brampton) may be slightly longer. We’ll give you an honest ETA when you call — not a vague “as soon as possible.”
No. We don’t add overtime surcharges for after-hours, weekend, or holiday calls. The quote you receive on arrival is the same rate regardless of when you call.
Shut off your main water supply valve if there’s any active water flow — it’s typically located near your water meter (basement or utility room). For a toilet overflow, close the supply valve at the base of the toilet. For sewage backup, avoid using any drains or toilets in the house. For a gas smell, leave the building immediately and call Enbridge Gas before calling us.
Yes. All technicians are licensed plumbers under Skilled Trades Ontario.
Most common emergency repairs — burst lines, sump pump replacements, main drain blockages, supply line failures — are completed in a single visit. We carry parts for the highest-frequency repairs. If a repair requires special-order parts or significant excavation, we’ll tell you upfront and give you a timeline.
We cover Toronto (all neighbourhoods), North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, York, East York, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Mississauga, Brampton, Pickering, Ajax, and Whitby. If you’re not sure, call and we’ll confirm before you wait.
